Beavers Drop Game to League Leading St. Croix Falls: At Hayward Friday
The Cumberland Beavers Football Team played a solid game despite losing to St. Croix Falls last Friday night, dropping a 35-14 contest to the league-leading and undefeated Saints in St. Croix Falls. Cumberland now prepares for a road trip to Hayward this Friday for a match-up against the 2 and 5 Hurricanes.
The Beavers only trailed the Saints 14-8 at halftime and played a solid brand of ball throughout the night. The team continues to show fight and improvement, while finding an identity on the offensive end.
Jack Owens was one of several Beavers having a nice night for Coach Dan Henken. The junior running back scored both Cumberland touchdowns, one on a touchdown pass from quarterback Uriah Johnson and the other on a short touchdown run. Owens finished the night with 41 yards rushing in four attempts and three receptions for 41 yards.
Seniors Chayden Berghammer and Derrick Gideo added three receptions each for 52 and 51 yards respectively, while Gideo rushed for 30 yards in only six attempts.
Quarterback Uriah Johnson had his best overall game with 10 completions in 21 attempts for 144 yards. He suffered one interception in the contest, the Beavers only turnover of the night.
Defensively, Oziah Thompson had a Beavers interception, while Harrison Ruppel had a team-leading 15 tackles. Brody Gilbertson added 14 tackles, and Logan Peterson and Owens 13 each.
Another good effort will give the Beavers a chance to pull off their first victory in Hayward on Friday night. The Hurricanes are 2 and 5 on the season, but coming off a 28-8 victory over Ashland last week. Their main weapon on offense has been the arm of quarterback Keegan Walsh, as Hayward is only averaging 12.6 points per game.
