Cumberland Wrestling Team Places Three on Podium in Madison

It was an excellent three days of wrestling for the Cumberland Beavers, as at the conclusion of activities, three team members stood on the podium at the 2025 State Tournament in Madison. Leading the way was Sophomore Braden Johnson, who finished second, while Senior Jack Owens finished third and Senior Cooper Schramski, sixth. Junior Logan Peterson also wrestled well for Coach Reid Olson, but did not place.

“It was a great State Tournament that capped off an exciting season, as we had two seniors, Jack and Cooper, end amazing careers on down in Madison. I am extremely grateful for their presence as leaders throughout the season and know they will be very successful in whatever they choose to pursue in the future. Our two returners, Braden and Logan, meanwhile, also had great seasons with Braden making it all the way to the finals. I look forward to continuing to work with those two, as well as the rest of the team next season.” said Coach Olson.

As a team, Cumberland scored the 11th most points in D3. They were led by Johnson, who saw his incredible sophomore campaign end with a 49-2 record.

After scoring tech falls in his two opening matches at 120-pounds, Johnson took Pecatonica/Argyle’s undefeated and top-seeded Aidan Gruenfelder (59-0) into one of the night’s most exciting matches, before dropping a 6-5 decision. It was Gruenfelder’s second consecutive State Title, while Johnson added a second to the third he took as a freshman. The loss will certainly motivate Johnson even more, as he will look to add a 2026 State Championship to his 105-5 career record.

Owens finishes his excellent senior season at 43-8 with his third-place finish. His loss came by pin to Shiocton’s Blake Cartin in the semifinals. Carton went on to finish second, while Owens rebounded with a solid 9-3 decision in the third-place math over Oostburg’s Liam Richards. Iowa-Grant/Highland Junior Jaxon Busse took the 165-pound Championship.

Schramski, meanwhile, went three and two in Madison to earn his sixth-place finish and finish the season at 36-10. After a first-round win in the 132-pound bracket, he dropped a 11-3 decision to eventual runner-up Lakota Brewer of Riverdale. The Cumberland Senior responded with two solid victories, before dropping a sudden victory decision to Aaron Knetter of Stratford in the fifth-place match. It was a great rebound by Schramski, who missed all of last season following knee surgery.

Cumberland’s final State participant was Logan Peterson, who went two and two at 157-pounds, but did not place. He finishes up a very good season with a 39-12 record.

After an opening round victory, Peterson was pinned by eventual State Champion and top-seeded Tyson Imhoff of Iowa-Grant/Highland in a quarterfinal match-up. He came back with his own pin in his first consolation match, before losing by decision to Valder’s Brayden Lenz in a consolation semi. Peterson will look to return to Madison for a third straight year next winter.

“Each one of our kids has grown and matured greatly throughout the year. Wrestling will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions with extreme highs and lows. They have worked hard, persevered, learned a great deal about themselves, and I could not be more proud of each of them,” concluded Coach Olson.
