Track Team Participates in HON Meet; Sectionals are Friday in Marathon
The Cumberland Track Team headed to Unity High School last week for the 2026 Conference Track Tournament. In the ten-team boy’s competition, the Beavers finished 8th as Northwestern nipped Hayward 131 to 128 for the team title, while the girl’s team took 10th as Hayward finished in first place.
The boy’s had the only Cumberland HON Champion of the day in Senior Evan Hornstein. He became the Conference 100m sprint champion by running a 11.58, just ahead of second-place Devon Kerkhoff of Barron, who ran a 11.84. Finishing in second place for the boys was the 4x800m relay team comprised of Ben Dettinger, Tommy Dettinger, Alex LaBlanc, and Nick Wells, who ran a 8:52, finishing runner-up to Unity, who ran a 8:37.
The best finish for the girl’s team was by Lauren McCreary, who threw the discus 102-09 to finish behind HON champion Samaya Fahle of Spooner, who won with a throw of 114-00.
The final Cumberland participant finishing with All-Conference recognition, was Max Odden, whose throw of 41-03 left him in third place behind 2026 Conference Champion, Brennen Hanson of Barron, who threw the shot 47-02.
Fourth place finishes went to Tommy Dettinger in the 3200 and Abbigail Schultz in the shot, while fifths went to Hunter Fowler in the discus and Mya Gardner in the pole vault.
The following night, the JV Conference Meet was held in Barron and Cumberland came away with four first-place finishes.
They included the Girl’s 4x200m relay team which included Elsa Carlson, Alejandra Delgado, Jordyn Olson and Danica Jungbluth, Jordyn Olson in the 100m dash and long jump, Austin Hornstein in the 200m dash, and Elsa Carlson in the triple jump.
Olson’s great day also included a second in the 200m dash, while Hornstein added a third in the 100m dash.
Cumberland participated in the WIAA Regional on Tuesday, with those qualifying heat the Medford Sectional this Friday.

Jack Owens - Pole Vault - 5/8/2025
Coach O’Connell got a first-place pole vault effort of 12-6 from Senior Jack Owens, as he won the event and set a new School Record, previously held by Scott Hanson. Owens continues to improve each and every competition.
Chayden Berhammer - 55m Dash - 3/25/2025
At the UW-Stout Blue Devil Invitational, Chayden Berghammer set the indoor 55m dash school record. He ran a time of 6.98, which ties the previous record held by Isaac Runstrom from 2022! Chayden is the second male athlete to run under 7.00 seconds in the program's history!
